Uzbek belongs to the Turkic languages and is spoken by almost 24 million people in Uzbekistan and other countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. In the 14th century an early form of Uzbek, Chagatai ( named after one of the sons of Genghis Khan}, written with the Arabic script, emerged as a literary language. In 1927 a version of the Latin alphabet replaced the Arabic script, and was in turn replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet in 1940. Recently, moves have been made to reintroduce the Latin alphabet.
