Turkmen

Turkmen is the national language of Turkmenistan. It belongs to the Turkic family of languages and is closely related to the Crimean Tatar and Salar languages. Turkmen only started to appear in writing form at the beginning of the 20th century. Then it was written with the Arabic script. Between 1928 and 1940 the Latin alphabet was used whereas from 1940 it was written with the Cyrillic alphabet. Since Turkmenistan 's declaration of independence in 1991, Turkmen has been written with a version of the Latin alphabet based on Turkish.
