Piemontese

Piedmontese is a Romance language spoken by over 2 million people in Piedmont, a region in northwest Italy. The first documents in the Piedmontese language were written in the 12th century. In addition, literary Piedmontese developed in the 17th and 18th centuries and literature in Piedmontese has never ceased to be produced. It includes poetry, theatre pieces, novels as well as scientific work. Many linguists acknowledge Piemontese as an independent language, although in Italy it is considered as a dialect of the Italian language.
