Gilbertese |
Gilbertese or Kiribati is an Austronesian language, part of the Oceanian branch and of the Nuclear Micronesian subbranch. It is mainly spoken in the The Republic of Kiribati, which was formerly called the Gilbert Islands. Their languge took the name Gilbertese. The islands were named after Captain Thomas Gilbert, who "discovered" the main island of the group in 1788. Kiribati [kiribas] is the local version of Gilbert.
