Akan

Akan is a language spoken mostly in Guinea and in Suriname. It consists of two subgroups,Twi(the Akuapem and Asante dialects) and Fante. The language was disseminated in Suriname and Jamaica with the arrival of slaves. The descendants of escaped slaves in the interior of Suriname and Jamaica still use a form of the language. They also maintain the 'day name' custom of giving to their children the name of the day that they were born.
