Marathi

Marathi belongs to the Indo-Aryan languages. It is spoken by the Marathi people in western India. There are 90 million fluent speakers of the language worldwide. Marathi is the 4th most spoken language in India and the 15th most spoken language in world. Along with Bengali, Marathi is the oldest of the regional literatures in Indo-Aryan languages, dating from about 1000 AD. Marathi is estimated to be over 1300 years old and it first appeared in writing during the 11th century in the form of inscriptions on stones and copper plates. While from the 13th century until the mid 20th century Marathi was written with the Modi alphabet,since 1950 it has been written with the DevanÄ?garÄ« alphabet.
