Sardinian |
Sardinian belongs to the Romance languages and it is remarkable for being the most conservative of the Romance languages. The language is in general use in central and southern areas of Sardinia. It has prestige equal to Italian in some contexts including writing, and the majority of the population over 35 use almost no Italian. The early origins of the Sardinian language are still obscure, due mostly to the lack of documents, as Sardinian appeared as a written form only in the Middle Ages.
