Oromo

Oromo is an Afro-Asiatic language. It is spoken as a first language by almost 30 million people in the South Oromo region and in other neighboring countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya being the 3rd largest language in Africa. There are also about 42,000 speakers of the language in Somalia. Before the Ethiopian Revolution, which took place in 1974, publishing and broadcasting in Oromo was prohibited. After the Revolution, the government undertook a literacy campaign in several languages, including Oromo, and finally publishing and radio broadcasts were introduced in the language. Oromo uses a modified Latin alphabet called Qubee, which was formally adopted in 1991. In addition the language is also known as 'Borana'. This name is used almost exclusively in Kenya, while 'Oromo' is used in Ethiopia. The name "Galla" has a derogatory meaning.
